Francoeur wants out of New York

Edged from the lineup by a 21-year-old rookie, Jeff Francoeur has told the Mets he'd like to be traded to greener pastures -- i.e., where he could play. "We want to play every day," Francoeur's agent Molly Fletcher said yesterday. "We prefer to play in New York. But if we're not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else." The Mets are aware of Francoeur's position, a team official indicated. Eligible for arbitration, Francoeur is a candidate to be non-tendered by the team and cut loose at season's end. He is playing on a one-year, $5 million contract. With Fernando Martinez called up to play ahead of him this past weekend, the writing is on the wall. (The Star-Ledger)Comment

Boeheim not pleased with Knicks

Until a legal ruling makes things more clear, Isiah Thomas headlines will likely involve opinion, and Jim Boeheim was not shy about his thoughts on a reuniting with the Knicks. Three members of the Team USA coaching staff weighed in Tuesday on the Knicks' controversial hiring of Isiah Thomas as a consultant, with Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim saying it crossed a line that shouldn't be crossed. "If it's good one place, then it's good anywhere," Boeheim said after the U.S. men's national team scrimmaged on the city's West Side in preparation for the upcoming FIBA World Championships in Turkey. "You throw all that out there, and it wouldn't be good. It doesn't make much sense to me. I just don't think it's a good thing." (CBSSports.com)Comment

Matchup makes La Russa proud ... and sick

The Cardinals may have Brandon Phillips to thank for an inspired, tension-filled Tuesday night win. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa didn't necessarily enjoy watching the contest from his office. He claimed that he vomited four times because his stomach was churning so violently throughout the nine innings. ... "I'd have to search long and hard, and I've been around a long time, but I guarantee you that was tied for first," La Russa said. "I haven't had too many games in all the years I've managed that were in this category of reaching down there deep and gutting it out and playing baseball. This was as good an exhibition of that as many that I've ever been around." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)Comment
