Pinch-hitting in the eighth inning of a 9-5 loss to the Padres, Pete Rose makes his final major league appearance. The Reds player-manager, who ended his 24-year career with a .303 batting average, was struck out by future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage.

Jesse Orosco

Oriole reliever Jesse Orosco, 42, sets a major league mark pitching in his 1,072nd game, passing Dennis Eckersley on the all-time career appearance list.

Craig Biggio

In a pre-game, 55-minute ceremony at Minute Maid Park, Craig Biggio becomes the ninth Astro to have his jersey number retired. The Long Island native is the team's all-time leader in games (2,850) and seasons (20) played.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps wins his Olympic-record eighth gold medal with a little help from his friends. After Phelps gave the U.S. the lead in the butterfly leg of the 400-meter medley relay, anchor Jason Lezak held off Aussie Eamon Sullivan in the freestyle to nail down the win in a world-record 3 minutes, 29.34 seconds.
