Auburn fan petitions Obama to fire Gene Chizik

Just two years after winning the BCS National Championship, the Auburn Tigers have fallen from grace. The team has yet to win a conference game this season and their disappointing season has left fans disgusted and ready for a new regime to run the show. One fan took his disgust and frustration with the program to another level by using the website "We The People" to petition President Barack Obama to make a change at the top of the Tigers program. The fan called for the firing of Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs and head coach Gene Chizik. FanSided.com has a copy of the petition that was sent to President Obama. (FanSided.com)Comment

Only conclusion: Payton's considering Dallas

That the Saints and Sean Payton are attempting to hammer out a new contract begs the question of what is taking so long. There's only one logical reason why Payton's deal hasn't been finalized. He is indeed having serious thoughts about leaving. To be more precise, he's having serious thoughts about leaving for Dallas. Forget the other potential openings around the league. Payton isn't going to Philadelphia or Carolina or the New York Jets. ... The Cowboys' job is currently occupied by Jason Garrett. But it might be vacant soon. If the Cowboys miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season owner Jerry Jones might make a move -- especially if Payton is available. And the only reason he will be is if he and his agent stall talks with the Saints. (Times-Picayune)Comment

NL East rivals after B.J. Upton

A new team has officially entered the thick of the B.J. Upton sweepstakes. [Braves GM] Frank Wren spent Thursday afternoon and some of the early-evening hours courting [Upton]. The Braves welcomed Upton to Turner Field on Thursday to provide the talented outfielder a better sense of how much they are hoping that he chooses to play in Atlanta next year. ... [The] Braves appear to regard Upton as the most attractive outfielder available on the free agent market. But the Braves are not the only National League East club interested in Upton. The Phillies are believed to be making a serious push to land the 28-year-old outfielder, who has been with the Rays since being selected with the second overall selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
