Peter Fill flies down the mountain in the downhill competition in an FIS Ski World Cup event in Wengen, Switzerland. The Italian finished 18th, 2.18 seconds behind countryman Christof Innerhofer.
Fourteen-year-old Ayumu Hirano of Japan does a backside air in a practice run for the SuperPipe competition at the Winter X Games. The youngest competitor at the X Games, Hirano placed second in the SuperPipe with a score of 92.33 on his second run.
Blake Griffin rises up for a huge slam in the Los Angeles Clippers' matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 22. Griffin got the poster, but the Thunder got the win, defeating the Clippers 109-97.
Boston Bruins left winger Daniel Paille lays out New York Islanders defenseman Brian Strait in Boston and New York's Jan. 25 game. Paille had an assist as the Bruins earned the victory, 4-2.
Kansas guard Elijah Johnson sneaks past Kansas State guard Shane Southwell for a layup in the first half of the in-state rivalry game. Johnson's Jayhawks earned state bragging rights, holding off the Wildcats 59-55.
Meryl Davis and Charlie White compete in the pairs free dance at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 26. The duo's free dance score of 118.42 was more than 13 points better than the runner-ups, Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
The New Orleans Hornets' Anthony Davis and the San Antonio Spurs' Tiago Splitter battled for a rebound in the first quarter of a Jan. 23 matchup. Splitter led all scorers with 25 points to propel San Antonio to a 106-102 victory.
Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Anders Lindback squirts himself in the face with water in the second period of the Lightning's game against the New York Islanders on Jan. 21. Lindback made 40 saves, but that was one too few as the Islanders won 4-3.
Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin rejects Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat's dunk attempt. Playing without point guard Chris Paul, the Clippers struggled offensively, hitting just 39.8 percent of their shots in the 93-88 loss.
Shaun White soars above spectators in the snowboard SuperPipe final at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. White won gold in the event for a record sixth straight year, giving him 15 all-time gold medals at the X Games.
Washington State guard Mike Ladd gets the offensive rebound and the put-back as he rises above Oregon's Arsalan Kazemi, Tony Woods and Damyean Dotson. Ladd's 14 first-half points helped give the Cougars a 10-point lead at halftime, but Oregon stormed back to win 68-61.
Simon Dumont spins high above the crowd at the ski SuperPipe final of the Winter X Games. Dumont took sixth at the competition, while David Wise won the gold medal.
New York Knicks shooting guard J.R. Smith attempts a contested layup against Boston Celtics small forward Paul Pierce in a Jan. 24 game. Smith hit a big three-pointer with 1:11 remaining to put the Knicks up by five as they held on to win 89-86.
Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat falls after receiving a hard foul from Los Angeles Clippers small forward Caron Butler in the second half of the Suns' 93-88 win on Jan. 24. Gortat scored 15 points with eight rebounds in the victory.
Indiana forward Will Sheehey takes the underneath route to the hoop, cutting beneath his leaping defender in the Hoosiers' Big Ten battle with Michigan State. Led by 21 points from Victor Oladipo, Indiana held off the Spartans 75-70.
