Cano, Yankees headed for clash
Hal Steinbrenner has a fight on his hands -- and while it's early, it's likely he know it. [Steinbrenner] emerged from a closed-door meeting [Tuesday] with Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi to state the Yankees are willing to make a "significant long-term contract" offer to retain Robinson Cano. Think of this like a heavyweight throwing a feel-'em-out jab in the early rounds. Because this negotiation is nothing if not a battle of heavyweights. Biggest agent (Scott Boras). Biggest franchise (Yankees). One of the greatest players in the world (Cano). ... [Boras] almost always takes his elite players to free agency and lets open bidding determine a true price. Sapp takes another shot at Suh
Warren Sapp said he called Detroit GM Martin Mayhew this past summer and warned him that the Lions were in danger of slipping in the 2012 season because he'd seen just that after one of Sapp's teams followed a surprise playoff appearance with a slump. The good news for Lions fans? Sapp expects the Lions to bounce back this season. "This should be the bounceback year," Sapp said. ... Sapp said that only one person can lead the Lions back to the playoffs: defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. "He has to be the catalyst," Sapp said. "If he is playing, then everybody goes with him. Hawks struggling to get assets for Smith
As of Wednesday morning, Atlanta hadn't found its strike price in the case or Josh Smith. Engaged with multiple teams in trade talks for [Smith], the Hawks are struggling to get the assets they are seeking for the prospective free agent, league sources told CBSSports.com Tuesday. Hawks GM Danny Ferry has told prospective trade partners he is not interested in taking back future salary and he won't do a deal "just to do it," one person familiar with the discussions said. The Hawks have been in conversations with many teams about the 27-year-old forward, with the most persistent conversations happening with the Suns, Bucks, Celtics and Nets.
