NCAA backs out of Miami settlement talks

As if the NCAA hasn't done enough already to aggravate Miami, add this to the list: Last week, UM and the NCAA engaged in serious settlement talks, and several UM people expected a deal because president Mark Emmert seemed initially supportive. UM wanted a settlement and likely would have accepted modest scholarship reductions. But a source said the NCAA then informed UM there would be no deal and suggested to UM the enforcement staff and two key boards were against it because of concerns about "not deviating from the rules." Also, UM tried to convince the NCAA to not use the words "lack of institutional control" -- and was hopeful at one point it might be changed to the less serious "failure to monitor" -- but the NCAA wouldn't back down. A-Rod wants to remain a Yankee

Alex Rodriguez said yesterday he wants to remain part of the Yankees in his first comments since reports surfaced again linking him to performance-enhancing drugs. "I am conducting two rehab sessions each and every day in an effort to get back on the field and rejoin my Yankees teammates," Rodriguez said through a spokesman. "I think we have a great team and I want to be a part of it." Rodriguez, 37, is expected to be out until midseason after Jan. 16 surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. The Miami News Times earlier this month uncovered documents from Miami anti-aging clinic Biogenesis that allege Rodriguez purchased PEDs. (New York Post)Comment

Derrick Rose distances from brother's anti-Bulls rant

With a brief statement released through the team, Derrick Rose tried to distance himself from comments made by his older brother/manager, Reggie, to ESPN Chicago on Thursday. "I have always felt that the Bulls organization's goals have been the same as mine, and that is to bring another championship to this city," Derrick Rose said 30 minutes before the game against the Miami Heat. Reggie Rose had said that the Bulls' lack of activity could be a big factor in whether Rose returns from knee surgery this season. Bulls vice president John Paxson, along with general manager Gar Forman, grabbed Rose in the hallway of the United Center right after his shootaround and brought him into a room for a talk that lasted nearly 10 minutes. When Rose came out, he had no comment and promised that a statement was forthcoming. Despite the statement, there was still a cleanup job in progress because of Reggie Rose's comments.
