Conditioning issues for Jets rookie QB?
With all that's facing Geno Smith -- the big market, the brash head coach, the franchise drama and a quarterback competition -- one might reasonably expect him to have prepared to wow in camp. NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger watched [Smith] at New York Jets practice this weekend and came away impressed. Well, mostly impressed. "He looked good to me [Sunday] until he ran gassers at the end of practice," said Baldinger. ... "And Geno Smith looked like he had done no conditioning. It was actually embarrassing to see how far behind he (Mark) Sanchez and (Matt) Simms and everybody else that's there." The rookie quarterback was more impressive during the parts of practice that count most. ... Selig would invoke 'integrity of the game' on A-Rod
At the very least, this latest round appears to pit the two parties on a collision course. If Alex Rodriguez is intent on appealing his looming suspension in an effort to stay on the field and protect his contract, commissioner Bud Selig is prepared to throw the book at the steroid-stained Yankee by invoking one of his office's most extreme privileges -- the right to take action against a player to preserve the integrity of the game, the Daily News has learned. ... [By invoking that rarely used power,] Selig would attempt to effectively keep Rodriguez from ever returning to the field by bypassing the grievance procedure outlined in the joint drug program MLB operates in conjunction with the Players' Association, sources told The News. Surprise 'serious candidate' emerges in Philly
While perhaps not to the degree Boston has, Philadelphia appears to be aimed at going young in its coaching search. Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach David Vanterpool interviewed for the [76ers'] head coaching opening on Monday and has emerged as a serious candidate for the job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Philadelphia general manager Sam Hinkie has moved deliberately on the search, interviewing multiple candidates, but Vanterpool has risen into legitimate consideration, league sources said. San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown and Boston Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga are among the coaches who have made strong impressions in the process, sources said.
