When Jerry Jones looks in the mirror, he sees a perfectly capable general manager. Jones said hiring a general manager would be like duplicating work. "It's often been said, well why don't I get someone to be the GM, why don't I get someone to pick the players?" he said. "Well, who in the world do you think that person, when they walk through the door and say we want to get this player and we want to pay this player, what in the world do you think I'm going to do? I'm going to sit down, and I'm going to go through it, and I'm going to say, 'Show me the player. Show me everything about the player. Before I write the check. Show me the player, and let me see everything about the player.' Well, rather than that have happen, I get involved and know everything there is to know about the players." (Star-Telegram)Comment
Louisville's Strong wants nothing to do with Texas talk
Not only are folks at Louisville likely concerned they'll lose their quarterback, but speculation also finds their head coach in the thick conversation for taking over in Austin. Charlie Strong wants nothing to do with the speculation surrounding the vacant Texas head coaching job. The University of Louisville coach on Tuesday was named the front-runner for the job by oddsmakers, which came as a bit of a surprise to those around the U of L football program. The odds he'd take the job were listed at 6-5 per sportsbook.ag, up from 5-2 on Monday, and made him first ahead of Baylor's Art Briles and Vanderbilt's James Franklin. "I don't even think about it," Strong said. "I don't even worry about it. I have a good job here. ... The only thing I can control is what's happening right here." (The Courier-Journal)Comment
Knicks enter Omer Asik sweepstakes
Omer Asik in New York? The Knicks made a foray into the [Asik] sweepstakes and had discussions with the Rockets and a third team about a three-way swap, an NBA source told The Post. But the source said the Knicks are likely to fall short of obtaining the Houston 7-footer who has asked to be traded. Asik, who makes $5.5 million this season, is an obvious fit as the Knicks are thin and injury-wracked up front with Kenyon Martin and Amar'e Stoudemire both risks, but have a glut of shooting guards. The Knicks are willing to deal Iman Shumpert -- whose stock has fallen a bit in recent weeks -- and Metta World Peace. J.R. Smith is the lone prominent Knick who can't be traded until Jan. 15 under a quirk in the collective bargaining agreement. The Rockets want to move Asik by Thursday. (New York Post)Comment
