Daily Jolt: Cowboys' Romo could be cleared to play

Add Jerry Jones to the list of optimists. Jason Garrett stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the Cowboys are likely to play the most important game of their season without quarterback Tony Romo. [Jones] isn't ready to give up hope, either. "All I'm saying is he has back spasms, symptoms that we're treating as we go along in the week to see if he will play," Jones said late Monday evening. "There is nothing structurally that will rule him out if he feels good and is cleared to play. Nothing." The Cowboys end the regular season Sunday night against Philadelphia. A victory would give the team the NFC East title and end a three-year playoff drought. Garrett insists the club will evaluate Romo on a day-to-day basis despite national media reports that an MRI revealed the quarterback has a herniated disk that could require surgery.(Dallas Morning News)Comment
On the upside, the Knicks did win Monday night in Orlando -- even if they lost a few players. Carmelo Anthony went down, Raymond Felton went down and the Knicks were ready to go down, collapsing and blowing almost all of their 25-point third-quarter lead. Somehow the Knicks escaped with a 103-98 victory at Amway Center over the Magic, but not even a win can be savored in this jinxed Knicks season. Anthony could be lost for the Christmas clash with the Thunder -- or longer despite his optimism. Felton could be lost for at least a month after hearing a pop in his right groin. Knicks embattled coach Mike Woodson can't seem to catch a break. "It's just been that type of year," Felton said as he hobbled out of the locker room.(New York Post)Comment
Here we go again. If this were a one-time thing, an isolated difference of medical opinions, the Orioles' decision to run from free-agent closer Grant Balfour would be easy to dismiss. Alas, it is not a one-time thing, but a pattern dating back 15 years. And for the Orioles, a team that already is at a crossroads, the Balfour fiasco could not have come at a worse time. The Orioles need to win soon. ... the dispute over Balfour's physical should give you pause -- the same way the Marlins give players pause when they refuse to grant no-trade clauses. The Marlins will trade any player at any time, no matter what they say publicly or tell the player privately. The Orioles will quash deals by citing problems in a player's physical, and sometimes the problems are not really problems at all. Which is not to say the O's are always wrong.(FOX Sports)Comment
