First France, now Italy. The finalists in the 2002 World Cup are both gone from the 2010 event, with defending champion Italy finishing last in its group after Thursday's 3-2 loss to Slovakia.

Robert Vittek gave Slovakia a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, making the most of a poor pass from midfielder Daniele De Rossi. Vittek also scored in the 73rd minute after a corner kick.

In the 36th minute Dutch striker Robin Van Persie split the Cameroon defense and fired a quick right-footed strike to beat Cameroon keeper Souleymanou Hamidou for the first goal of the game.

Samuel Eto'o took advantage of a Rafael Van der Vaart yellow card inside the area and confidently converted the resulting penalty kick for Cameroon's first and only goal.

Keisuke Honda continued his stellar World Cup campaign with a goal in the 17th minute, powering Japan to a fast start. Honda tacked on an assist later in the match, giving him a total of two goals and an assist for the tournament.

In what was a play-in game for the knockout round, Japan's Shinji Okazaki put things out of reach with a goal in the 87th minute, giving his squad a 3-1 lead. The goal was set up by Honda, who weaved his way into the box before giving Okazaki a clean look at goal.
