Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge is out until at least September after having hip surgery this week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.

Sturridge has not played since April 8 because of hip and thigh injuries and will miss at least three European Championship qualifiers—and the first two months of the next season.

Sturridge, 25, has only played in 18 games across all competitions this season, scoring six goals and adding six assists.

"With Daniel, unfortunately for him and his career, it's been ongoing in terms of injuries. He's had a number of issues this season which aren't related to the operation he's had," Rodgers said.

"We feel now, hopefully this can cure a lot of the problems he's had and I'm sure he'll work over the coming months to get back fit."

Manchester United acquires Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven

Liverpool is currently fifth in the Premier League standings, four points behind Manchester United with three matches remaining.

The top four teams in the Premier League earn a spot in next season’s Champions League, while fifth earns a place in the UEFA Europa League.
