LONDON (AP) — On a frenzied, big-scoring night in the League Cup, Jermain Defoe's hat trick settled Sunderland's nine-goal thriller as Premier League teams were given a rough ride by lower-league opponents on Tuesday.

Defoe's treble in a 6-3 win over Exeter compensated for defensive gaffes which allowed the fourth-tier side to draw level at 3-3 at half time.

"I am totally unhappy with the goals we gave away at this level," Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat said. "I never had the feeling they would beat us."

There were eight goals at Aston Villa. Scott Sinclair's treble ensured the hosts ousted fourth-tier Notts County 5-3 in extra time after it finished 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes.

Watford was Tuesday's only second-round Premier League casualty, with second-tier Preston winning 1-0. Miguel Britos was sent off on his debut for Watford, which is still searching for its first win after returning to the Premier League.

West Bromwich Albion and Stoke only advanced to the third round by winning on penalties.

After being held 0-0 by Port Vale, West Brom beat the third-tier side 5-3 in the shootout. Stoke edged fourth-tier Luton 8-7 on penalties after being held 1-1 over 120 minutes.

The third round, when the Premier League teams involved in European competitions enter, should offer more drama with two derbies: Tottenham-Arsenal and Aston Villa-Birmingham.

BURY 1, LEICESTER 4

Joe Dodoo's Leicester debut was even more memorable thanks to his three goals against the third-tier side. Some Leicester fans invaded the pitch after the 20-year-old winger completed his treble in the last minute.

NEWCASTLE 4, NORTHAMPTON 1

Newcastle winger Florian Thauvin scored three minutes into his first start following a $20-million transfer from Marseille to help Steve McClaren register his first win as manager.

CRYSTAL PALACE 4, SHREWSBURY 1

Palace was forced into extra time by the third-tier visitors but Glenn Murray then scored a penalty before Chung-yong Lee and Wilfried Zaha also netted.

ROTHERHAM 1, NORWICH 2

Norwich's winner against the second-tier side came from Ricky Van Wolfswinkel scoring his first goal for the club since his debut two years ago. The Dutch striker spent last season on loan at French side St Etienne.

EASY WINS

Swansea, the 2013 winners, eased into the third round with a 3-0 victory over York and Premier League newcomer Bournemouth went one better by beating another fourth-tier side, Hartlepool, 4-0.
