Sunderland hires Sam Allardyce as manager on two-year deal
Sam Allardyce will be the new manager of Sunderland AFC, the team announced Friday.
Allardyce has been signed to a two-year contract, and will replace former manager Dick Advocaat, who resigned last Sunday after a 2–2 draw with West Ham at home. Advocaat left just eight games into the season.
Allardyce, 60, has previously managed Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, and most recently West Ham, a position he stepped down from following the 2014–15 season. A Premier League team has never been relegated under his watch.
“I have enjoyed my break from football and now I am raring to get back,” Allardyce said.
Sunderland currently has three points in league play, tied for last place in the Premier League standings with Newcastle. In 2014–15, Sunderland finished 16th, missing relegation by two spots.
