Milik's goal leads Poland to nation's first European Championship win

Arkadiusz Milik's 51st-minute goal was the difference as Poland nets a valuable three points.

Poland won a match at a European Championship for the first time, riding Arkadiusz Milik's 51st-minute goal to a 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland in Nice, France on Sunday.

Milik broke the deadlock just into the second half after Poland dominated two-thirds of the possession over the first 45 minutes but could not translate it into goals. Robert Lewandowski's run into the box took a pair of defenders with him, leaving Milik open for Jakub Blaszczykowski's cutback pass just inside the Northern Ireland box. The 22-year-old Ajax forward settled with one touch and then fired a low, left-footed shot to score. Milik had six goals in Euro qualifying, second on the team next to Lewandowski's 13.
