Leicester City, Arsenal settle for 0-0 draw in Premier League battle

The top two finishers from a season ago found it difficult to find much in the attack, splitting the points at King Power Stadium.

Leicester City and Arsenal finished as the top two teams in the Premier League a season ago, but after each suffered season-opening disappointment last weekend, they failed to distinguish themselves from one another in a chance-light 0-0 draw at King Power Stadium.

Leicester had a pair of penalty shouts go unheard, while Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech made a vital save late on Riyad Mahrez to account for the key moments in the match.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came closest to scoring for Arsenal in a rather drab first half, while Leicester was denied its PK in the final stages of the opening 45 minutes.

Leicester was dealt a blow early in the second half, as Nampalys Mendy was forced off with an apparent leg injury. The central midfielder, signed from Nice to help make up for the void of N'Golo Kante, was replaced in the 53rd minute by Andy King.

Kasper Schmeichel cut out Arsenal's best opportunity in the second half, with Mesut Ozil, making his season debut off the bench, combining with Alexis Sanchez only to have the Leicester goalkeeper slide it to safety. 

Leicester had an impact sub off the bench as well, with Ahmed Musa forcing Hector Bellerin into a dangerous challenge in the 87th minute. Leicester's penalty shouts, again, went unheard, though, keeping the game scoreless.

Mahrez had Leicester's best chance in the run of play in stoppage time, displaying the dazzling moves that helped him earn PFA Player of the Year last season, but he was denied on his right-angled effort by Cech.

Both teams will be involved in Thursday's Champions League draw and then will turn their attention to going after their first league victories. Leicester hosts Swansea City, while Arsenal travels to Watford on Saturday.
