Aston Villa's highly sought-after defender Jordan Amavi had a transfer to La Liga side Sevilla all but done when the Spanish side confirmed they had reached an agreement over the player last week for a reported £7m.

The French left-back has, however, failed his medical tests ahead of the proposed move and has forced Sevilla to dismiss Amavi's transfer, according to Estadio Deportivoreports.

Initially, the deal was believed to be stalling over an agreement between the two clubs over the method of payment and although the club are yet to make an official announcement, it now appears that the defender's failed medical is the reasoning behind why the transfer stalled.

The 23-year-old suffered an injury towards the back end of his maiden season with Aston Villa where the club got relegated from the Premier League. Despite making a recovery and featuring in 36 games for Aston Villa last season, Sevilla detected a risk in the knee that Amavi sustained his injury during the 2015/16 season.

As a result of this, Sevilla's sporting director Óscar Arias will now be forced to look elsewhere to fill the gap left by Benoît Trémoulinas in the left-back position.

27-year-old Sergio Escudero featured in 37 games for Sevilla last season as their left-back, however, Los Nerviosos are seeking reinforcements to their current defensive options.
