Bayern Munich defender Bernat will return to Germany after picking up some ligament damage to his ankle during the club's pre-season tour of Singapore.

Around the half hour mark during the 4-0 friendly loss to AC Milan, Bernat had to be substituted after making a tackle and the Spaniard will now undergo further tests back in Germany on Monday to find out the extent of the injury.

Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti told the club's website: "He can't continue the Audi Summer Tour and will fly back to Munich tomorrow. He'll undergo an examination on Monday."

Bernat will now face a race to be fit in time for the new season, with Bayern due to start their season with the DFL Supercup game against rivals Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of August.

Austria international David Alaba will now almost certainly start the 2017-18 campaign as Bayern's first choice left-back thanks to the injury to Bernat, who has made 99 appearances in all competitions for the German side since transferring from Valencia in 2014, scoring five goals.

Bayern were embarrassed by Milan during the 4-0 friendly loss, with Franck Kessie, Patrick Cutrone and Hakan Calhanoglu all scoring to ensure Ancelotti's side followed up their penalty shootout defeat to Arsenal with another loss.

Bayern have already secured four pre-season victories, beating Wolfratshausen, Erlangen-Bruck, Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.
