Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid on a three-year deal - for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old full-back has become the Mapies fourth signing of the summer as Rafa Benitez prepares for the club's re-entry into the Premier League this season.

Manquillo started his career with Atletico Madrid but failed to break into the first-team on a consistent basis, which has led to loan spells with Liverpool, Marseille and Sunderland in the last three seasons.

He has represented Spain at every youth level, and will move to St. James' Park with previous experience in the Champions League and Europa League.

After putting pen to paper at his new club, Maquillo said: "I'm very happy to be here. From the first moment that Rafa Benítez called me, I just knew that I had to come here, to such a big club.

Benítez added: "Like Jacob Murphy, Manquillo is another young player. He can play both sides of the defence and he has a lot of motivation because he knows he has a point to prove.

"He can still improve but he has played for Spain at under-21 level and that is because he is a good player, so hopefully he will show that form here."

The 23-year-old joins Jacob Murphy, Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune as the club's newest additions and will now link up with his new teammates at the club's pre-season training camp in Ireland.
