Senior figures at Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring the condition of star defender Dani Carvajal closely, following the 25-year-old's diagnosis of a heart condition.

The Spaniard is currently out of action following the tests, which revealed that the player is suffering from a viral infection which attacks the membrane that encloses the heart.

The La Liga giants took to their official website, via Football Espana, to communicate the worrying situation with the club's fans, stating:

"Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal, he has been diagnosed with a viral pericardium infection. His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

The condition is of particular concern, as it lead the sufferer to experience symptoms similar to that of a heart attack - seeing the individual endure sharp chest pain.

Carvajal has been a pivotal figure in the Real defense for a number of seasons, and has won three Champions League trophies and a La Liga title with Los Blancos.

Given the recent history of footballers dying tragically on the pitch, Real Madrid will be  committed to not permitting the Spanish international to play for the club until they can be absolutely sure he has recovered from the potentially deadly infection.

In June, ex-Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote died in a training session, after suffering a heart attack.
