Paul Merson Believes Rafael Benitez Will Return to an Old Club for His Next Managerial Post

Paul Merson claims Rafael Benitez will return to Liverpool for his next managerial post, according The Sport Review.

Benitez had a very successful spell as Reds boss between 2005 and 2010, winning the Champions League, the FA Cup and taking them to second in the Premier League in 2009, in the process building one of Liverpool's best starting elevens in the Premier League era.

Benitez, who is currently in charge of Newcastle, has been praised for the work he's done on Tyneside since his appointment in 2016, taking them back to the top flight in his first full season and has led the Magpies to an impressive start to the season.

With Everton looking for a new manager, Merson believes that Benitez would not take over at Goodison Park but a return to Anfield is his most likely destination. He said: "Liverpool will be Rafa’s next job, not Everton."

Current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is contracted until 2022, but has come under criticism this season after some poor defensive displays in the last two seasons despite two cup final losses and Champions League qualification.
