Friday MLS Recap: Carlos Vela Golazo Leads LAFC to Win, Dwyer Scores 99th Career Goal in Win
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)—Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi scored in the second half and expansion Los Angeles FC beat Vancouver 2-0 on Friday night to end the Whitecaps' 11-game Major League Soccer home unbeaten streak.
Marco Urena assisted on both goals to help Los Angeles (3-2-0) end a two-game losing streak.
The defeat, before a crowd of 22,120 at BC Place Stadium, marked the first time in over a year Vancouver lost back-to-back games. The Whitecaps (3-3-1) were beaten 2-1 on the road to Real Salt Lake last Saturday.
Vela opened the scoring in the 59th minute. Left alone in the box, the shifty forward was fed the ball by Urena and launched a rainbow shot that arched into the top right-hand corner of the net. That broke LAFC's scoreless streak of 202 minutes.
Rossi took advantage of some poor Whitecaps clearing attempts to score in the 70th minute. Vela and Rossi have four goals this season.
The Whitecaps played without striker Kei Kamara, who suffered an injury during training Thursday. He was replaced by Erik Hurtado.
Orlando 2, Philadelphia 0
CHESTER, Pa. (AP)—Dominic Dwyer scored his 99th career goal off Sacha Kljestan's 86th assist and Orlando City beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 on Friday night.
Orlando (3-2-1) won for just the second time in its last nine road games. Philadelphia (1-2-2) is winless in its last four matches.
Dwyer gave Orlando City its first lead of the season in the 38th minute. Kljestan chipped it over the defense and Dwyer timed his run perfectly to curl it around a charging Andre Blake.
Seven minutes later, Chris Mueller dribbled it from near midfield and capitalized on a defensive giveaway at the top of the 18-yard box for the rookie's second goal.
Dwyer, who nearly made it 3-0 in the 90th minute, has four goals in his last three games after missing the opening three matches due to injury. Kljestan's assist tied Andy Williams (1998-2011) for ninth in league history.
Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik dove to deny Fabrice-Jean Picault's breakaway shot in the 55th.
