Mauricio Pochettino has said chairman Daniel Levy may not have stuck by him if he had won trophies as Tottenham manager but not finished so highly in the Premier League table.

The Spurs boss, while widely considered to be one of the best in the league in recent years after taking Tottenham from being on the fringes of the European places to comfortable top four finishes in each of the last three seasons, has been criticised by some for not yet winning a major trophy.

While that barren run may come to an end this year, as they prepare for an FA Cup visit to Tranmere ahead of an EFL Cup semi-final with Chelsea, the Argentine boss explained that trophies aren't as important as consistency in the Premier League

“What is success? Of course we are the first that we want to win a trophy but that doesn't mean that it is going to be a successful thing or put Tottenham in a different level,” Pochettino said ahead of the Tranmere game, as quoted by the Evening Standard.

“To win the Carabao Cup and be in the middle of the table in the Premier League I think today we are not talking how we are talking here. I think I was sacked a few years ago.

“With two or three Carabao Cups or FA Cups, if you don't finish how we have finished in the last three seasons and win the FA Cup, I don't know if Daniel would have too much patience with me or is very nice to say 'OK you're 10th in the PL' and give you a new contract.”

The Spurs boss added that while winning trophies is what his side need to do to go to the next level, his ambition lies beyond that, with a Premier League or a Champions League.

“What puts you on a different level is when you win the Premier League and you are capable to challenge every season for the Premier League and if you become a real contender one day to win the Champions League.

“My ambition is to win the Champions League one day with Tottenham or the Premier League."
