Federer gets votes for Swiss government post

Roger Federer's graceful punch volleys have inspired voters in his hometown of Wollerau, Switzerland, to punch their ballots. In an election held last weekend, Federer received 132 write-in votes to represent the canton of Schwytz in the Swiss Senate:

An election official based in Schwytz, near Zurich, said that write-in votes are permitted under Swiss law and that had the appeal been more successful, Federer could have won a senate seat.

"One could be elected here, even if one is not a candidate," he said.

Senator Federer. It has quite a ring to it.

Meanwhile, Marat Safin is running for office. Here's Safin on his bid to a win a seat in the lower house of the Russian parliament:

"I am an intelligent guy and I have a lot to bring and a lot of ideas about things and what to do. I am very committed to it." Safin added that he might be the "best looking guy in the [State] Duma, but that's only because all the other guys are over 60."
