French Open: Round 2
Roger Federer's straight-sets victory took only one hour and 26 minutes to play, but two delays stretched the match to two hours and 50 minutes from start to finish.
Despite two rain delays and damp, chilly weather, No. 1 seed Roger Federer easily disposed of Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.
"It's not easy, you know, to come on and off. Conditions are really slow and wet," Roger Federer said after the match. Fortunately for Federer, the weather didn't impact his game, as he rolled to a straight-sets victory.
Top seed Amelie Mauresmo survived a shaky second set to defeat 19-year-old Vera Dushevina of Russia in straight sets 6-1, 7-6.
Like most players have this year, Amelie Mauresmo struggled with the brutal weather at Roland Garros: "It was great to play today despite the conditions, but I reckon I struggled with my tennis," Mauresmo said after her victory.
Because of the frigid weather, Venus Williams had her trainer buy a top with ''Roland Garros'' written across the front, because she hadn't brought any long-sleeved shirts that would be allowed on court.
After three rain delays totaling nearly two hours, Venus Williams defeated Emma Laine (left) of Finland 7-6, 6-2.
Marcos Baghdatis showed his agility, but it wasn't enough to beat Julien Benneteau of France. The Australian Open finalist lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Marcos Baghdatis was down 2-5 in the fourth set and fought off two match points to force a deciding fifth set, but he didn't have enough to get past Julien Benneteau (left).
Ana Ivanovic needed all of 47 minutes to dispose of France's Emilie Loit 6-1, 6-1.
Ana Ivanovic is hoping to improve on last year's surprise showing, when she reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. "I feel no pressure," Ivanovic said. "I'm so young and have so many years in front of me. Each match I just take as a new experience."
Nineteen-year-old Gael Monfils defeated the oldest man in the French Open field, Dick Norman, 35, to equal his best showing at a Grand Slam.
An official French Open tennis ball lay peacefully on the court during one of two rain delays during the Roger Federer-Alejandro Falla match.
