Texas wins 2 events at NCAA swim meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Joseph Schooling beat five of his Texas teammates to win the 100-yard butterfly Friday on the second night of the NCAA swimming championships.

The freshman touched in 44.51 seconds to edge Longhorns sophomore Jack Conger.

''He ran me down by three-quarters of a body-length at the Big 12 (meet)'' Schooling said about Conger. ''I wasn't going to let that happen again.''

The Longhorns qualified a record six swimmers for the final and they finished Nos. 1-4, 6 and 8 for a total of 92 points.

''I can tell you Joseph was happier than Jack,'' Texas coach Eddie Reese said about the finishing order.

Texas leads the team race with 399 points. California was second with 275, followed by Michigan with 210 and Florida with 205 points.

Texas' Will Licon won the 400 individual medley in 3:36.37, beating defending champion Chase Kalisz of Georgia. Kalisz touched in 3:39.51.

California won the 200 medley relay in 1:22.74 - 0.34 seconds off the U.S. record it set earlier in the day.

Christian Quintero of Southern California won the 200 freestyle in 1:32.03, and was part of the Trojans' winning 800 freestyle relay that touched in 6:11.64. In the relay, Reed Malone chased down North Carolina State's Simonas Bilas over the final 100 yards.

Samuel Dorman of Miami broke the NCAA championship record on the 3-meter springboard. Dorman had a score of 529.10, breaking the record of 496.80 that Indiana's James Connor set in the prelims.

Arizona's Kevin Cordes won his fourth consecutive 100 breaststroke title in 50.25, and Ryan Murphy of California successfully defended his title in the 100 backstroke at 44.21.

Cordes joined Brendan Hansen and Steve Lundquist as the only swimmers to win the 100 breaststroke all four years.

''It's was definitely a goal,'' Cordes said. ''I knew it was going to be difficult.''
