Italian resort Cortina set to host 2021 Alpine ski worlds

OBERHOFEN, Switzerland (AP) The Italian ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo is set to host the Alpine world championships again after four successive losing bids.

The International Ski Federation says Cortina is the only applicant to host the biennial Alpine worlds in 2021.

Cortina, which stages speed races on the women's World Cup calendar each season, was previously a candidate to host each world championships from 2013 to 2019.

Cortina also hosted the Alpine worlds in 1932 and 1941, plus the 1956 Winter Olympics where Alpine events doubled as world title races.

FIS says its ruling council will choose hosts for 2021 Alpine and Nordic events at the governing body's next congress, in June 2016 in Cancun, Mexico.

The three applicants for the Nordic worlds are: Oberstdorf, Germany; Planica, Slovenia; and Trondheim, Norway.
