Oshawa wins Memorial Cup, beating Kelowna 2-1

QUEBEC CITY (AP) Anthony Cirelli scored off a rebound at 1:28 of overtime to give the Oshawa Generals a 2-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets on Sunday night in the Memorial Cup final.

Rockets goalie Jackson Whistle stopped the first shot from Chris Carlisle, but Cirelli was in the doorstep to bang in the rebound.

''I was shocked when it when in,'' Cirelli said. ''It was an unbelievable feeling. ... Coming from midget hockey last year and making this team, then doing this. .... We worked so hard all season and to win it is unbelievable.''

The Ontario Hockey League champion Generals won all four of their games in the four-team event. They also won the junior hockey tournament in 1939, 1940, 1944 and 1990.

Cirelli also tied it at 1 in the second period. Ken Appleby made 37 saves, allowing only Tomas Soustal's first-period goal for Western Hockey League champion Kelowna.

''Both teams battled hard and it could have gone either way,'' Rockets captain Madison Bowey said. ''We played hard and you know what? Two great teams meet up and one team has to lose and tonight we were on the wrong side of things.''

A crowd of 10,391 turned out for the final hockey game at the Pepsi Colisee. The arena will be demolished and replaced by the 18,000-seat Videotron Centre next door.

Kelowna's Leon Draisaitl was the tournament MVP. He had four goals and three assists in five games.

The 2016 tournament will be played in Red Deer, Alberta.
