Katie Ledecky earns leading 5 Golden Goggles nominations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Olympic and world champion Katie Ledecky earned a leading five nominations for the Golden Goggle Awards which honor the year's top swimming performances.

The teenager from Bethesda, Maryland, will vie for female athlete of the year, female race of the year for her victorious 200, 800 and 1,500-meter freestyles at this summer's world championships in Russia, and relay performance of the year for the 4x200 free relay in Kazan. She has won two consecutive female athlete of the year awards.

Missy Franklin, Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps and open water swimmer Jordan Wilimovsky earned three nominations each.

Ledecky won five gold medals at the world meet. Also nominated for female athlete of the year are open water swimmer Haley Anderson and Franklin.

Lochte, Phelps and Wilimovsky will contend for male athlete of the year.

The awards will be presented Nov. 22 in Los Angeles.

Phelps earned two nods in the male race of the year category even though he didn't compete at worlds. He set world marks in winning the 100 and 200 butterfly at U.S. nationals in Texas.

Among the coach of the year nominees are Bob Bowman, who guides Phelps; Bruce Gemmell, who oversees Ledecky; and David Marsh, who works with Lochte.

Fan voting, which counts for a percentage of the final vote totals, is online and ends Nov. 13.
