Riessle wins Nordic combined World Cup opener

LILLEHAMMER, Norway (AP) Fabian Riessle of Germany won the season-opening Nordic combined World Cup event on Saturday for his first career victory.

Riessle was fifth after the ski jump portion but finished the 10-kilometer cross-country portion in 25 minutes, 22.4 seconds to beat Akito Watabe of Japan by 12.5 seconds.

Ikka Herola of Finland was third, 15.2 seconds back.

Szczepan Kupczak of Poland led after the ski jump but was quickly overtaken and finished 19th, more than 1 1/2 minutes back.

Both events at the scheduled season-opening World Cup meet in Finland were canceled last weekend because of strong winds.
