8:40 a.m.

Flower-decked floats, marching bands and equestrian units are moving through Pasadena, California, as the 127th Rose Parade kicks off under cloudless blue skies.

Enthusiastic fans determined not to let security fears or frigid weather get in the way of enjoying the New Year's Day ritual camped overnight to claim front-row spots.

The temperature at the parade's start barely topped 40 degrees but spectators were shedding layers as the sun lit up the bright floats woven together with roses, carnations and other flowers.

The parade's theme is ''Know Your Adventure'' and the grand marshal is award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, who waved to the crowd from an antique convertible.

Authorities said the event would be held under unprecedented security, although there were no known threats.
