USA Gymnastics to hold 2017 nationals in Anaheim, California

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The 2017 U.S. national gymnastics championships will be held in Anaheim, California, for the first time.

USA Gymnastics announced Tuesday that nationals will be Aug. 17-20 at Honda Center. The arena has previously hosted the 2003 world championships, when the U.S. won the first women's team title and Paul Hamm won the men's all-around title, and the 2004 U.S. Olympic team trials.

The national meet serves as part of the selection process for the U.S. team for world championships.

The USA Gymnastics national congress and trade show will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center from Aug. 16-19, 2017.

Veteran Olympic coach Bela Karolyi, 2004 Olympic all-around champion Carly Patterson and 2012 Olympian Sam Mikulak were among those on hand for the announcement.

Visit Anaheim, the city's marketing arm, recently established Sports Anaheim, a group focused on attracting world-class sporting events to the city best known as the home of Disneyland.
