Oregon sweeps NCAA indoor track and field championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Oregon swept the men's and women's NCAA indoor track and field championships.

Behind Edward Cheserek's three titles, the Ducks easily won their third consecutive men's title Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex with 62 points, followed by Arkansas (39) and Tennessee (34).

The women's team scored 53 points, with Arkansas second with 50 points and Georgia third with 45.

Cheserek won the 3,000 meters for the fourth consecutive year. He finished in 8 minutes, 40 seconds.

''Coach told me to just relax as much as you can, sit back and just wait until a couple laps left and then you can go,'' he said. ''I knew everyone in the field was giving it a last kick so my gut was telling me just go and I was ready to go.''

Cheserek also won the 5,000 on Friday and was part of the winning distance medley relay team. He's won 13 NCAA championships in track and cross country.

Teammate Devon Allen won the 60 in 7.56.

The women's team has won six of the last seven championships, finishing second to Arkansas last season.

Raevyn Rogers won the 800 on Saturday in 2:04.68.

Like Cheserek, Notre Dame's Molly Seidel won the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Her coaching advice: ''Really be aggressive.''

''Really, it's just a matter of trying to focus on the job at hand,'' said Seidel, who won the 10,000 title at last season's outdoor championships. ''I tried not to get distracted. Usually I'm super distracted, but when I get in a race, that is when everything quiets down, that's why I love it.''
