Pregame Reads

  • All that pink you see at NFL games may not be benefitting breast cancer awareness as much as you think, reportd Ryan Basen of Sports on Earth.
  • Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports thinks that the Ole Miss football coach should have less tolerance for intolerance by his players.
  • Former NFL special teams coach Mike Westoff says the "Touchback Era" is ruining football as we know it.

Starter

College Football #4 Ohio State vs. #16 Northwestern, 8:00p.m. (ABC)

One day I got home from a long bus trip into downtown San Francisco to notice that some stranger had placed a "Welcome to Chicago" sticker on my bookbag. A few hours later, I got a phone call saying that I had been accepted into the Northwestern journalism school. There was some magical force sending me a message that day. But then I got into Columbia, so I said "Screw fate" and moved to New York instead. That's my story about Northwestern.

The A's playoff game has pushed the kickoff of this game until near midnight, prompting fake outrage from East Coasters who probably wouldn't have watched a snap anyways. If the NFL Network is on point, it'll seize the opportunity to produce a cool time lapse of the stadium being changed like this one from the Staples Center a couple years ago.

College Football (Blue Indicate Top 25 Team)

Air Force vs. Navy, 11:30a.m. (CBS)

This game almost didn't happen because of the government shutdown. Any injured players better hope Obama keeps the Affordable Care Act intact.

#15 Washington vs. #5 Stanford, 10:30p.m. (ESPN)

Not to be outdone by rival Oregon, Stanford unveiled it's own stupidly-expensive football facility. Actually, they were totally outdone by Oregon. I guess Silicon Valley money isn't quite as good for football as Nike money.

Cowardly Cop-out of the Week: Georgia State vs. #1 Alabama, 12:21p.m. (ESPN3)

The Tide has built a dynasty out of playing mid-season non-conference against cupcakes. The Panthers of Georgia State look for their first win after dropping games to Chattanooga, Samford, and Jacksonville State. Alabama is a 55-point favorite.
