Pirates infield pays respects to groundskeeper swallowed by tarp

The day after a Pittsburgh Pirates groundskeeper got swallowed up by a tarp, a memorial appeared on the infield at PNC Park.

One Pirates groundskeeper had a tough day at the office on Tuesday. Matt Gerhardt got swallowed up by the tarp as the grounds crew tried to cover the field. When he arrived back at the park on Wednesday, there was a memorial near the scene of the crime.

Fortunately for Gerhardt, Pirates players Andrew McCutchen and Sean Rodriguez came out of the dugout to help extricate him from the tarp’s grasp.

“A lot of wind, and not enough help,” McCutchen said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Guys needed some help. We knew it was going to happen, that's why we stayed out there. It happened. Luckily, he was all right.”
