6 actual sporting events to watch on the most boring day of the year
This is it, the nadir. There are no sports, not until Friday. Well, there are no major sports, but there are still a few reasonably popular sports (and many, many more obscure ones) that can help desperate fans get their fix.
Football
We’ve got honest-to-God football to watch tonight! The IFAF World Championships are being played in Canton, Ohio, and the United States has a crucial matchup against France. The winner advances to Saturday’s gold medal game. The action starts at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3.com.
Former Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins is the coach of the national team and Brett Favre’s nephew Dylan is the quarterback.
Baseball
Yes, there’s no major-league baseball to watch, but the future All-Stars are on display in minor-league All-Star games on Wednesday night.
The Triple A All-Star game is at 8 p.m. ET and can be seen on MILB.com. It features hot prospects like Corey Seager and career minor leaguers like Irving Falu.
The Double A Eastern League is also holding its All-Star game on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET. Indians prospect Francisco Lindor was named to the team but he’s been in the majors since June.
Basketball
The NBA Summer League continues all this week in Las Vegas, with top draft picks and forgotten March Madness stars on display. It’s a watered-down version of the NBA, but it’ll have to do. There are also four WNBA games on Wednesday, including one featuring the league’s leading scorer, Elena Della Donne.
Soccer
There are a pair of Gold Cup games, one MLS game and two NASL games on Wednesday, plus a whole bunch of international club friendlies. Trinidad & Tobago, the pair of islands that gave us the hilariously corrupt CONCACAF official Jack Warner, can clinch first place in Group C with a win or draw against Mexico on Fox Sports 2. The NASL’s Jacksonville Armada are looking for their first win of the season against Minnesota United.
Cricket
Big Caribbean cricket match tonight. We’ve got the Guyana Amazon Warriors hosting the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN3.com. The Tallawah’s have the highest-scoring batsman in the league and the bowler with the most wickets. Guyana’s Lendl Simmons can do stuff like this:
National Pro Grid League
NBC Sports Net has the broadcasting rights to something called the National Pro Grid League. It’s a coed competition in Crossfit-type events, or something.
The San Francisco Fire take on the Phoenix Rise at 6:30.
