Jose Valverde is close to an agreement on a two-year, $14 miillion contract with the Detroit Tigers, SI.com has confirmed.

The deal will also include a player option for 2012.

Valverde, 31, led the NL in saves in 2007 with Arizona and '08 with Houston. He had 25 saves last season for Houston, which had offered him a one-year contract to return this season.

Because Valverde is a Type-A free agent, the Astros will receive the Tigers' first-round pick in the June draft.
