Red Sox starter Jake Peavy is "not close" to being traded, according to a report from Jen Royle of the Boston Herald. 

Rumors about a Peavy trade had been swirling in advance of the July 31 deadline. The Red Sox are 47-53 and in last place in the AL East, plus Peavy will be a free agent this offseason, meaning the team could be looking to unload him for prospects.

Reports surfaced that the St. Louis Cardinals were interested in trading for Peavy, and Peavy said he was prepared to be traded after speaking with general manager Ben Cherington on July 9.

Peavy is 1-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 starts this season. He won the 2007 NL Cy Young and has made three All-Star teams.
