Reports: Matt Cain to see Dr. James Andrews about elbow inflammation

San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain will get an evaluation on his elbow inflammation from Dr. James Andrews, according to several reports. The Giants placed Cain on the disabled list on July 21, retroactive to July 11. Cain hasn't pitched since July 9.

Cain's production this year is down from his career marks. He is 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 90.1 innings pitched. His 6.97 strikeout rate is his lowest since his rookie year in 2005.

Cain is in the fifth year of a $139.75 million deal. 

On Saturday, the Giants traded for former Cy Young winnerJake Peavy, sending pitching prospects Edwin Escobar and Heath Hembree to the Boston Red Sox.
