Blue Jays activate Lawrie off DL

TORONTO (AP) Blue Jays infielder Brett Lawrie had a short stay in his return from the disabled list, leaving Tuesday's game against Baltimore after three innings with tightness in his lower back.

Lawrie was activated off the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day after missing 36 games with a fractured right index finger.

Danny Valencia replaced Lawrie, who singled in his only at-bat.

The Blue Jays, who went 18-18 without Lawrie, trail the first-place Orioles by four games in the AL East. Toronto entered play Tuesday one game ahead of New York for the second wild card.

To make room for Lawrie, the Blue Jays placed infielder Steve Tolleson on the paternity list. Tolleson, who can miss a maximum of three games, is batting .246 with three homers and 13 RBIs.
