The Boston Red Soxplaced rightfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring.

Righthander Matt Barnes was also recalled from Triple A Pawtucket.

Victorino sustained the injury while running the bases in Wednesday's 7–5 loss to the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla. Over 12 games this season, he is batting .143 with two RBI and a .474 OPS.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Victorino was improving, but the need for another arm in the bullpen prompted Boston to make the move.

"With the number of innings our bullpen is pitching, that was the overriding thing," he said.

Barnes last pitched five days ago and was scheduled to start for Pawtucket on Saturday. The 24-year-old  appeared in five games for the Red Sox last year, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits over nine innings. In two appearances with Pawtucket this season, Barnes allowed five runs on eight hits in eight innings.
