In a corresponding move, the team recalled right-hander Mike Foltynewicz from Triple-A Gwinnett. Foltynewicz will make his first major league start on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

Johnson was injured in the fourth inning of Thursday’s 5-1 loss to Cincinnati when he slid headfirst into second base while attempting a steal. He left the game for good in the middle of the fifth inning.

"Being on the DL will stink for me because I just want to be out there and playing baseball," Johnson said. "But it will get better and I'll get back."

The team said that Johnson, who will have his hand placed in a cast, is set to have an MRI on Friday to determine the amount of ligament damage in the hand.

Johnson is batting .279 with no home runs and five RBI in 16 games for the Braves (10-12), who have lost three games in a row, but still are tied for second in the National League East.
