Lakers' guard Nick Young is out eight weeks with a torn ligament in his right thumb, reports the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan.

The injury occurred during practice after Young attempted to steal the ball from teammate Kobe Bryant. He will miss the entire preseason and the first month of the regular season.

Last year, Young averaged a career-high 17.9 points per game for Los Angeles, shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from beyond the three-point line. Those numbers will likely decline with the return of Bryant, who was injured the duration of the 2013-14 season.

In July, the Lakers signed Young to a four-year, $21.5 million deal.
