Dolphins' Philbin: Cutting Johnson wasn't easy

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said wide receiver Chad Johnson was released for his "body of work" since he signed in June, and not solely for his domestic violence arrest over the weekend.

Philbin, who encouraged Johnson to use his fame to be a positive example on the first episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks" training camp documentary, claimed the move wasn't a simple one for the franchise to make. Miami signed Johnson days after he was released by the New England Patriots in June.

"With any type of these decisions, it was not an easy one," Philbin said. "It was not reactive, nor was it based on one single incident."

Linebacker Karlos Dansby told WMEN-AM radio in Miami that he wasn't please the team parted with Johnson.

"I hate that we didn't stand behind him," Dansby said. "I know the guys in the locker room would. But the organization felt a totally different way about the situation, and they probably had more information than we know. And they had to do what they had to do."

Johnson was arrested Saturday after a confrontation with his wife, Evelyn Lozada, in their car while parked in the driveway of their home. Police reports indicate the argument was allegedly over a receipt Lozada, a reality TV star who wedded Johnson a month earlier, found for a box of condoms while she was carrying groceries into the house. Lozada had a three-inch cut on her forehead she said occurred when Johnson head-butted her.

Lozada plans to press charges, according to police, and has received a protective order that prevents Johnson from contacting her. Johnson told police he was head-butted by his wife.
