Wilkerson sits out Jets' first voluntary workout

NEW YORK (AP) New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson will not attend the team's voluntary workouts this spring while he waits for a potential new contract.

The players reported for workouts Monday, but are not required to attend. Mandatory minicamp is in early June.

Agent Chad Wiestling said Wilkerson won't attend any of the voluntary workouts.

''Muhammad has been engaged in a workout program with his personal trainer since February,'' Wiestling wrote in an email to The Associated Press, ''and believes that continuing with his current program will put him in the best physical shape for the 2015 season.''

CBSSports.com first reported Wilkerson's absence.

Wilkerson is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and due to make $6.9 million this season. He acknowledged at the end of last season he was surprised there had been no movement on contract talks.

General manager Mike Maccagnan replaced the fired John Idzik in January, and recently said the Jets will discuss a deal with Wilkerson in the offseason - but likely not until after the draft next month.
