Pro Bowl defensive lineman Justin Smith and the San Francisco 49ers agreed to a two-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday on Twitter.

Smith was entering the final year of his contract. His career has taken off in five years with the 49ers. He's one of the NFL's top defenders, and he is one of the key pieces of the San Francisco defense.

The 33-year-old could be on track to end his career with San Francisco. The 49ers tweeted a quote attributed to general manager Trent Baalke: "Justin consistently sets a standard of excellence...This contract allows Justin to finish his career as a 49er." Smith struggled some last season while dealing with a torn triceps, and his statistics dropped. But in his five seasons with the 49ers, he has 32 sacks and 247 tackles.
