Tony Romo underwent back surgery Friday morning and is out the rest of the season, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said at his morning press conference.

Kyle Orton will start at quarterback for Dallas (8-7) when it plays host to the Philadelphia Eagles (9-6) Sunday night with the NFC East title on the line. Jon Kitna will backup Orton.

Garrett refused to discuss specifics of the surgery but added that he anticipates it will solve the issue.

"The procedure happened this morning," Garrett said. "We felt the surgery went well. Tony should be able to come home later today and start his rehabilitation."

Garrett didn't rule Romo out until today despite speculation throughout the week that he couldn't play. The 33-year-old received an epidural Monday for a herniated disk but couldn't avoid his second back surgery in eight months.

Romo, who has 3,828 passing yards with 38 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, played multiple weeks with a cracked rib and punctured lung in 2011.
