Marlins, Giancarlo Stanton not focused on long-term agreement

The Marlins and right fielder Giancarlo Stanton avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $6.5 million contract on Friday. But the two sides aren't discussing a multi-year agreement, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, because "both sides felt the timing wasn't right," Frisaro writes.

"From the outset, I think it was in everyone's interest to try [to] reach a fair and amicable settlement on a one-year contract," Stanton's agent, Joel Wolfe, told MLB.com. "We accomplished that. Now, Giancarlo can focus exclusively on getting ready for the season. He is pleased with the result and [is] looking forward to spring training."

The 24-year-old will be Miami's highest paid player next season, and a one-year deal makes him a prime target for a midseason trade.

Stanton, who made $537,000 last year, hit a career-low .249 with 24 homers and 62 RBIs in 116 games last season. He has an .889 career OPS with 117 home runs in four seasons.
