Braves sign starter Ervin Santana to 1-year, $14.1 million deal

The Braves announced Wednesday morning that they signed nine-year veteran Ervin Santana to a one-year deal.

Santana will make $14.1 million this season, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.

The 31-year-old went 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA in 32 starts for the Royals last year after eight seasons with the Angels. The 2008 All-Star has thrown at least 210 innings in three of the last four seasons and has made at least 30 starts in five of the last six.

Santana drew interest from the Blue Jays and Orioles, but Atlanta moved fast after its planned opening day starter, Kris Medlen, left Sunday's game with ligament damage in his elbow that may require season-ending surgery.

Projected No. 4 starterBrandon Beachy also left his start on Monday with biceps tendinitis — though the injury is not believed to be serious — and Mike Minor could start the season on the disabled list because of shoulder soreness. He's expected to make his Grapefruit League debut in the next week.

The deal pushes the Braves' payroll to about $110 million, which is "close to $20 million above" last year's, according to David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
