Panthers Place Cam Newton on Injured Reserve

The Panthers have placed quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve with a foot injury on Tuesday.

"For the past seven weeks, Cam has diligently followed a program of rest and rehab and still is experiencing pain in his foot,” Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. “He saw two foot specialists last week who agreed that he should continue that path prescribed by the team’s medical staff, and that it likely will take significant time for the injury to fully heal.

“We have said all along that it is impossible to put a timetable on this injury. Nobody is more frustrated with that fact than Cam."

Newton hasn't played since Carolina's loss to the Buccaneers in Week 2. The 2015 NFL MVP went 0–2 as the Panthers' starter to kick off the season, completing just 56.2% of his passes while failing to throw a touchdown.

Kyle Allen has logged six starts in Newton's place this season. Allen is 5–1 with 1,291 passing yards and nine touchdowns in 2019. He is in his second year with the Panthers. 

Newton visited a foot specialist last Friday. ESPN's David Newton reported on Sunday that the quarterback will not need surgery.
