Pinging The Portal: Cincinnati Diving Head-First Into Guard Transfer Market

CINCINNATI — The transfer portal in college basketball now has over 1,000 players housed in it as teams go through transition periods. Cincinnati is talking to plenty of those candidates, namely guards that could help replenish the coffers after three of their own backcourt members entered the portal.
The interest starts with a player close to home in Kentucky guard Dontaie Allen. The junior took a medical redshirt in 2019 and has struggled to get going in Lexington, playing just 6.4 minutes per game last season.
Allen did shoot nearly 40% from deep in 2020-21—but is trying to reset his skills in a new home. The consensus 92nd-overall recruit in 2019 has also heard from Northern Kentucky and Xavier.
Next up is Oregon State transfer guard Dashawn Davis. The leading assist man in the PAC-12 last season averaged 10.9 points and 5.5 assists in 2021-22 after spending two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College.
“They've shown interest and said they need a point guard but haven't really explained where I fit in," Davis told 247Sports. "How they would use me or how valuable I will be to them yet.”
The 6-foot-2 guard also led the PAC-12 in assist rate (34.5%) and was fourth in steals per game (1.4). He would be a dynamite running mate with David Dejulius.
